                            School of Music


                            The School of Music in Central Normal University was formerly the music section of School of Education of Central University (briefly referred to as Huada University). Before 1949, colorful cultural activities organized and participated by many foreign teachers of the music section, not only became beautiful sceneries of the campus, but also enjoyed a high reputation in both Wuhan and even Central China. In 1952, colleges and universities were adjusted nationwide. Based on the merger of the previous music section of School of Education in Hubei Province and the music major of the private Zhonghua University, in 1953, the Music Department of Central Normal University received its name officially. The head of the department was Lu Huabai, the composer and music educator. On November 21, 1985, Central Normal College issued to set up a preparatory group for music major, which was led by vocal music educator Yan Guoyi. In March 1986, the Music Department of Central Normal University (renamed Central Normal University in 1985), which was suspended for 28 years before rebuilding, was formally established and began enrolling students in the same year. The principle and practice of the School of Music is expanding year by year based on the expansion of the teaching staff and the improvement of the teaching standards. Since 1986, the School of Music has recruited students from 13 provinces and cities including Hubei, Hunan, Henan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Shandong. There are two undergraduate majors in music studies and music performances, and a master's degree in music studies. The development of the School of Music has been highly valued by the school leaders. The annual enrollment capacity has grown from 16 in 1986 to 790 in 2012. At present, there are 653 undergraduates and 254 graduate students. The School of Music has a faculty with a full range of professional disciplines, reasonable age structure, professionalism and academic influence. There are 86 faculty members and 74 teachers, including 12 professors and 28 associate professors. Teachers with overseas master's and doctoral degrees account for 16 percent of the total number of teachers. In recent years, the School of Music has built more than 10,000 square meters of music buildings and standard concert halls, added multimedia classrooms, purchased 121 pianos for teachers and students, including the million-dollar Steinway piano and Boston piano as well as the digital piano of modern teaching significance. The new music building installed with network cable and TV signal lines is a modern building for teaching, research and official business. All classrooms and offices are equipped with air conditioning. In order to strengthen the construction of the data room, the reading room area has been enlarged, music scores, texts and audio-visual materials have been added, and the staff of the full-time data room has been provided, which not only provides convenience for teachers to read, but also provides necessary conditions for students to get access to the latest cutting-edge theories and information. The investment in hardware equipment and the advancement of teaching reform have brought new opportunities to the development of the School of Music. In accordance with the times, the School of Music has seen a consistent development. It has intensified personnel training and improved the quality of education. The employment rate of graduates almost reaches 100 percent. Our school has trained a large number of outstanding talents in areas of music education and performance. They have won numerous awards in various professional competitions at various levels and are engaged in teaching, performance, music choreography, hosting and cultural management and many other professions in colleges, literary and art groups, cultural institutions, news media and other work units.
